The 50/30/20 budget, explained in five minutes
Needs, wants and savings: the simplest budgeting rule there is, and how to make it work when your rent is more than half your income.

The 50/30/20 rule splits your take-home pay into three buckets: 50% for needs like rent, groceries and transport, 30% for wants like dining out and subscriptions, and 20% for savings and paying down debt. It is popular because it is easy to remember and needs no spreadsheet.
When the numbers do not fit
In many cities, rent alone eats half of a paycheck. That is fine. Treat the rule as a starting point and adjust: 60/25/15 is still a budget that builds savings every single month.
- Start with what you actually spent last month, not what you wish you spent.
- Move one subscription from "needs" to "wants" and see how it feels.
- Automate the savings bucket on payday so it happens before you can spend it.
