How often should you get an eye exam?
The simple answer by age, the reasons to go sooner and what a comprehensive eye exam actually checks.

An eye exam is not only about reading letters on a chart. Your optometrist also checks the pressure inside your eyes, the health of your retina and optic nerve, and how well your eyes work together.
A rule of thumb
- Children: every year, and before starting school.
- Adults 18 to 60: every one to two years.
- Over 60, or with diabetes or glaucoma in the family: every year.
Go sooner if
You notice sudden blur, flashes of light, new floaters, headaches when reading or a curtain over part of your vision. Flashes and a curtain need same-day attention.
