Seven gentle signs it may be time for home care

Unopened post, a quieter fridge, skipped outings. Small changes that tell you a little help at home could make a big difference.

Needing help at home rarely happens overnight. More often it is a slow drift of small changes that are easy to miss when you see someone every week, and easy to worry about when you live far away. Here are the signs families most often mention when they first call us.

Around the house

  • Post and bills piling up unopened
  • A fridge that is emptier than usual, or full of out-of-date food
  • Laundry, dishes or housework that used to be done, now left

In everyday life

  • Giving up clubs, church, walks or visits they used to love
  • Wearing the same clothes for several days
  • Seeming lonelier, or more anxious about being alone
  • A recent fall, or a new fear of falling

Starting the conversation

Talk about what your loved one wants to keep doing, not what they can no longer do. Home care is about independence: a few hours of support can be exactly what lets someone stay in the home they love.
